WHY 13?
IT'S THE MAGIC NUMBER
The standard definitions of anemia is below 12 for women and 13 for men (WHO). However, this is based on statistics, not necessarily on what is ideal for health. Research shows using a benchmark of 12 for women puts them at higher risk for blood transfusion and does not make physiologic sense. The red cell mass in women is lower than men (for many reasons) but the concentration (Hemoglobin) should be the same. Therefore 13 is the ideal number.
A hemoglobin level of 13 supports optimal energy and physical endurance, ensuring your body has the oxygen it needs to thrive.
Dr Carolyn Burns
Keeping hemoglobin at or above 13 can reduce risks of fatigue, enhance cognitive function, and protect against complications linked to anemia.
